Length of shank 43/4 - 3/4" longer than our normal short shank pelhams.
The Bombers Bits Elliptical Pelham has a 45mm lozenge, that encourages the horse to mouth the bit. By mouthing the bit will often help to relax the horse and It is stronger than the Control Plate due to it having a smaller surface area. Consequently, a horse using his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control, will draw back and tuck his chin in, coming back to a better point of control.
The Pelham has attachments for two reins, one near the mouthpiece and one at the end of the shank. These reins have similar action to the curb and bridoon reins in the double bridle.
Some riders, not adept at handling two sets of reins, prefer to use rein connectors, leather loops which connect from one ring to the other on the bit shank. The rein is then attached to this Pelham rounding. This ensures that the rider is able to ride with just one set of reins.
The Pelham has the shortest shank (55 mm) out of our range, this will soften poll pressure and leverage on the mouthpiece and curb. If you are interested in a longer shank please feel free to ask.
The locking centre joint and curved mouthpiece are designed to remove the nutcracker action of a conventional single-jointed mouthpiece, so this bit will bear less pressure on the bars of the horse’s mouth when rein aids are applied. The mouthpiece cannot bend beyond a certain point, so it remains in a curve in the mouth, rather than forming a V-shape that could rub the top of the horse’s palate.
It is supplied with curb chain and hooks.
All our bits are made from blue sweet iron, because it: •oxidises easily •encourages salivation •helps bit acceptance •is warm and sweet
